How To Activate Your Tax Identification Number (TIN)

Once your Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) certificate is approved and downloaded, your next immediate task is ensuring your tax status is active.

Following the passage of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA), the process of getting a Tax Identification Number (TIN) has been heavily overhauled to eliminate the old bureaucracy. You no longer need to submit a separate, tedious tax application or pay an agent to get a tax card.

The modern, integrated process to activate and verify your corporate TIN works as follows:

    Step 1: The Automated Auto-Generation

The Corporate Affairs Commission and the newly restructured tax authority, the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS, formerly FIRS), have fully integrated their databases.

    • The Single Identifier Rule: For any new private limited liability company (LLC) or Business Name registered, your CAC Registration Certificate (RC) number or Business Name (BN) number automatically becomes your official Tax ID.

    • The Email Delivery: Once your CAC portal status shifts to Registered and your e-certificate generates, a system-automated notification containing your unified 13-digit corporate Tax ID is triggered and sent directly to the corporate email address you used during the CAC registration.

Step 2: Digital Retrieval & Verification

If you did not receive the automated email or need to retrieve the official digital printout for your bank account setup, you can pull it instantly from the online repository.

    1. Visit the official NRS Tax ID Portal (taxid.nrs.gov.ng) or the Joint Tax Board (JTB) verification site (tin.jtb.gov.ng).

    2. Click on the Corporate / Organization search tab.

    3. Select CAC Registration Number as your search criteria.

    4. Input your RC or BN number (enter the digits only, omitting the letters).

    5. Click Retrieve Tax ID or Search. Your full business details, alongside your active 13-digit TIN, will display on the screen. From here, you can download or print your official Tax ID profile page.

Step 3: Online Activation & Profile Domestication

To use your newly generated TIN to open corporate bank accounts, apply for startup grants, or handle legal invoicing, you need to link it to an active filing profile.

    1. Head over to the central tax clearance platform, TaxproMax (taxpromax.firs.gov.ng).

    2. Input your newly verified 13-digit corporate Tax ID to initiate profile creation.

    3. Upload digital copies of your CAC Status Report, Certificate of Incorporation, and the National Identification Number (NIN) of the primary director/proprietor.

    4. Once submitted, the system links your registration data to a functional tax profile, and your login credentials for monthly/annual returns are sent straight to your email.

Critical Operational Warning: Under current tax enforcement guidelines, commercial and digital banks are strictly mandated to freeze or restrict any corporate bank account that does not have a verified, active corporate Tax ID linked to it. Always ensure the business address listed on your utility bill matches your CAC filing exactly—data mismatches between the CAC registry and the NRS database will stall your verification.
